“You're off to Great Places! Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting, So... get on your way!”
- Dr. Seuss -
The beginning of every
New Year is always full of excitement! The air is fresh and everyone is open
and ready for change. We are motivated to become our best selves. Most
importantly, we are setting ourselves up for the rest of the year. If you start
with a positive attitude, you are more likely to succeed and accomplish our
hopes and dreams.
Start this year with
enthusiasm! Create a list of goals and intentions for the year. They can be big
or small, long term or short term. It’s important to have a mix of them. If you
can cross a few things off your list easily, you will feel motivated to keep
working on the more challenging tasks. Another important key for accomplishing
your objectives is to make a plan. Don’t just say, “This year I’m going to
better myself.” Instead, say, “This year I’m going to go to a yoga class once a
week,” or, “This year I’m going to meditate everyday for at least 10 minutes.”
The more specific we get with our intentions, the easier they are to
accomplish.
After making your plans,
and setting yourself up for success, remember to check back in with yourself
periodically. On your calendar, mark one day a month to reflect on what you’ve
done towards your goals and intentions. Usually when we make New Year’s resolutions,
we do really well for a month. Once the excitement of the new year has passed,
we lose motivation and get caught up in other aspects of our lives. By planning
ahead and dedicating a day to check in, you will be reminded why you made these
goals in the first place and reenergize your enthusiasm.
Sometimes it can be hard
to jumpstart, or restart, our plans after we’ve made them. Maybe it’s the fear
that we won’t succeed. Maybe our goals themselves seem scary. But try to get
passed the fear and remind yourself of the positivity and love you were
surrounded by during the holidays at the end of 2014. Don’t let the connections
or reconnections you made slip away as the season cheers dissipate. Feeling
love and supported by those around us can have a massive impact on our
wellbeing.
Good luck to you! You
will do great!
